Childhood Education

Childcare and Classes

“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." - Deuteronomy 11:18-19 (ESV)

Just as parents dutifully prepare and guide their children through each school year, Scripture teaches parents to do the same in regards to Christian Education. Ascension is committed to coming alongside parents as a resource for this spiritual training and character education. Our desire is that AscensionKids would become the best hour in your child’s week - one that will empower them each day of the week.

We offer several Childhood Education classes and programs on Sunday mornings. Age-appropriate and chock-full of activities, the curriculum from Gospel Light and Great Commission Publications engage children through various learning styles, experiences and centers, and integrates many fun activities that help children relate God’s Word to their world. Parents with babies are also welcome to hold their children in the auditorium during our 11am gathering.

Ascension strives to share God's Character and Word with the children and youth in our community. And we've seen Him stirring questions in their hearts!

Roseann, our Childhood Education Director, explains: "I have been particularly encouraged of late teaching the Explorers [class] as they have been engaged with the lessons and have been asking clarifying questions of the texts and of God's purposes. For example, just the other Sunday, a boy's question was so profound I suggested to him he also ask the question of Pastor Michael – and he did!"

AscensionKids Music – Ages: 1 (toddlers) to 11
This class, which is usually held before our worship service, is on break till the Fall. Please sign up for our emails to receive news when it starts again.

A special program for kids of all ages to learn to celebrate the Lord through music and song alongside their peers. Led by musician Emily Vold, they expand song repertoire, learn music theory and dynamics and also help contribute to the beginnings of an Ascension children's choir that will perform during special occasions (such as Easter or Christmas services). This program also provides an opportunity for children who already practice an instrument to contribute their musical skills, allowing extra practice time in a fun setting!

(Also for our parents to consider: Ascension offers an Adult Christian Education class that runs concurrent to the Music program, so that the whole family can learn more about our great God!).

Raised in Minnesota, Emily has recently moved to New York City to pursue a Master's degree in music performance at the Mannes College of Music. She has studied the violin for over 15 years and been singing almost since she could talk, and as a result feels passionate about passing her love of music onto others, whether through teaching or performing. She is excited to be teaching the children at Ascension about God as well as how to glorify God through music.
