Childhood Education

Childcare and Classes

Just as parents dutifully prepare and guide their children through each school year, Scripture teaches parents to do the same in regards to Christian Education. Ascension is committed to coming alongside parents as a resource for this spiritual training and character education. Our desire is that AscensionKids will empower our children each day of the week.

We invite you to be a part of the next chapter in our church's story, as we've recently launched our new and improved AscensionKids Academy. We offer age-specific Childhood Christian Education classes and programs on Sunday mornings.

“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." - Deuteronomy 11:18-19 (ESV)

Ascension strives to share God's Character and Word with the children and youth in our community. And we've seen Him stirring questions in their hearts!

Roseann, our Childhood Education Director, explains: "I have been particularly encouraged of late teaching the Explorers [class] as they have been engaged with the lessons and have been asking clarifying questions of the texts and of God's purposes. For example, just the other Sunday, a boy's question was so profound I suggested to him he also ask the question of Pastor Michael – and he did!"

SUNDAY SCHEDULE

9:30 - 10:30am

AscensionKids Music Club (for Ages 3 - 11)

*on break for the summer

Designed to enable moms and dads to attend Adult Christian Education class, students will learn music and movement through fun and age-appropriate songs. Older students will work in small groups and be exposed to music that can be sung in the context of a choir. Students with prior knowledge/experience with voice or various instruments will be encouraged to share their musical abilities and gifts.

(Our Adult Christian Education class runs at the same time as this program, so that the whole family can learn more about our great God).

Led by Emily Vold. Raised in Minnesota, Emily has recently moved to New York City to pursue a Master's degree in music performance at the Mannes College of Music. She has studied the violin for over 16 years and been singing almost since she could talk, and as a result feels passionate about passing her love of music onto others, whether through teaching or performing. She is excited to be teaching the children at Ascension about God as well as how to glorify God through music.

9:45 - 10:45am

Ascension Youth Academy (for Middle & High School students)

This group aims at drawing students into God’s vision of the church through his Word and the Holy Spirit. All members of Christ’s body – even teens – help to make up the people of God, the church, the dwelling for his glory in the world today.

This dedicated class time allows teens to discuss Scripture and ask questions. Afterwards, they are able to participate in our Sunday gathering at 11:00am.

Beyond the Sunday classroom, the group meets on the second Friday evening and the fourth weekend of the month. Second Friday events are often held at the FHYAA (66-01 Fleet Street, Forest Hills). For activities on the fourth weekend, please check our Community Calendar. The group engages in Bible lessons while enjoying games and refreshments. It frequently participates in activities like bowling, laser tag, and various indoor and outdoor recreation.

10:45 - 11:30am

AscensionKids Fun Club (for Pre-K through 2nd Grade)

This is an exciting large-group gathering time for kids to meet and get to know one another through songs and games. Fun Club starts just before our worship service, so that parents can drop off their child and attend the worship service.

*Children in 3rd Grade and up attend the beginning of the 11:00am worship service with their parents. They proceed to class after the community announcements portion.

11:30am - 12:30pm

AscensionKids Academy (for babies through 5th Grade)

After the Fun Club ends at 11:30am, the students will be brought to their age-specific academy classes. Click here for the different classes and an overview of the lessons and activities. (Parents always have the option of bringing their children to the adult service).
